The Transportation and Special Projects Division of Howard County, Maryland is a team of professional engineers and support staff who are responsible for the design and development of various public works projects. Recently, the county has seen the completion of several projects in the Columbia area, including improvements to a pedestrian bridge that crosses Route 29, the construction of a new apartment building, and the completion of Color Burst Park. Additionally, a new hotel has been approved and construction has begun on a second apartment building. All of these projects are part of the 30-year Master Plan for Downtown. The construction project for the US 29 pedestrian bridge in Columbia is expected to begin on or around Tuesday, September 5.However, due to difficulties in obtaining the materials needed to manufacture the new geometric spiral cage for the bridge, the project has been delayed and is now expected to be completed in February 2020. In addition to the bridge project, work to improve Oakland Mills Road between Guilford Road and Berger Road in Columbia is also underway.
The bridge will be closed again in early November and the project is now expected to be completed in early January. This work will be done in Amarillo, Texas (53%); Fort Worth, Texas (46%); and Ridley Park, Pennsylvania (1%), and is expected to be completed in December 2025.
